That's why we recently partnered with a group of talented students from Imperial College London to tackle a critical question: What does the future hold for the annual report? 

The traditional annual report, once a static document filled with financial data, is no longer enough to capture the attention of today's investors. The landscape is changing rapidly, driven by: 

  • Shifting demographics: New investor groups prioritise factors like Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) alongside financials 

  • Technological advancements: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionise report creation and consumption 

  • Evolving regulations: Upcoming changes could significantly impact reporting formats and content 

How Imperial College approached the project  

The students at Imperial College London conducted a comprehensive analysis of the current and future state of corporate communications, in particular the corporate reporting landscape. This research included:

Findings and how DP intends to use them  

The research uncovered areas of AI transformation in the corporate comms space, including content evolution, channel transformation and production enhancements. It looked in detail at new opportunities and focus areas in bringing annual reports into a digital landscape and outlined the impacts of a growing standardisation of ESG reporting.  

In this dynamic environment, understanding the future of reporting is crucial. This collaboration aims to provide valuable insights that will help us: 

  • Future-proof our clients’ output: By anticipating upcoming trends, we can equip our clients with the tools they need to create effective and engaging reports 
  • Offer strategic guidance: We can help businesses navigate the changing regulatory landscape and leverage new technologies to optimise investor communication
